Protégé now incorporates additional patent-level data fields related to citations, annuity fees, and legal events, expanding the underlying data available for analysis.
For patent analysts, technical relevance alone is rarely sufficient. Understanding how a patent is used, maintained, and evolves legally is often what determines its real strategic value.
These new data dimensions enable more nuanced assessments across three critical lenses:
Citations: indicators of technological influence and knowledge flow
Annuity fees: signals of portfolio maintenance decisions and perceived asset value
Legal events: visibility into lifecycle changes such as pending, in force, in active
Together, this moves Protégé closer to supporting portfolio quality and lifecycle analysis.
Protégé can now incorporate these fields when retrieving, filtering, and explaining results. This enables:
surfacing patents with high citation relevance when assessing influential technologies or key prior art
referencing legal events to contextualise changes in status, ownership, or enforceability
grounding answers in both technical and legal lifecycle signals, rather than relying solely on publication data
These fields improve analytical depth but should be interpreted with care:
Citation signals are directional, not definitive indicators of value or validity
Legal event interpretation remains context-dependent and does not replace formal legal assessment
The feature therefore strengthens contextual understanding, rather than acting as a standalone legal evaluation tool.

An analyst assessing a competitor portfolio can now go beyond identifying relevant patents to:
check which assets appear in force versus inactive or pending, indicating strategic commitment
highlight who cites the portfolio, checking technological relevance
Users can now rename and delete auto-saved conversations. Protégé also introduces a 90 day retention policy for conversations, with prior notification before deletion.
This improves continuity for ongoing work while helping users keep their workspace organised. It also makes data retention behaviour clearer and more predictable.
Users can now: a) reopen recent conversations with context restored, b) rename conversations to reflect the analytical topic, c) delete conversations that are no longer useful
Conversations older than 83 days are marked as Pending Deletion, and users are notified 7 days before automatic deletion.
Conversation history is retained for 90 days from creation date and then deleted automatically. Deleted conversations are not recoverable.

An analyst renames a conversation from a generic timestamp to \"Waymo’s patent portfolio\", making it easier to return to the work later. Older exploratory threads can be deleted to keep the workspace focused.

Protégé is now better at identifying simple requests and avoiding unnecessary complex analysis when a straightforward answer is sufficient.
Not every task needs a multi-step analysis plan. By responding more proportionately to simple requests, Protégé can answer faster and fail less often.
For tasks where a direct number or simple factual response is sufficient, Protégé now aims to avoid over analysing, over explaining, or invoking more complex reasoning than necessary.
This optimisation is intended for clearly simple tasks. More interpretive or multi-dimensional questions still require broader reasoning and explanation.
Example
If an analyst asks for the number of patents in a narrowly defined set - for instance owner Nintendo - Protégé no longer overcomplicates the task with unnecessary thinking and contextualising, but returns the number.
Protégé now includes better failure detection, classification, user messaging, and observability to reduce task failures and make recovery clearer when completion is not possible.
Reliability is not only about completing successful tasks. It is also about being honest and useful when something goes wrong. This release aims to reduce dead ends while helping engineering teams monitor and improve failure patterns systematically.
Protégé now:
detects and logs incomplete task outcomes more clearly
classifies failure types such as ambiguity, system error, unsupported capability, and safety restriction
presents clearer user facing explanations when tasks fail
suggests practical next steps such as retrying, narrowing scope, rephrasing, or switching workflow
This release improves handling and observability of failures. The focus is on reducing hard failures and making failure states more transparent and actionable.
Example
If a request is too ambiguous to complete safely, Protégé now explains what is unclear and suggests how to refine the input rather than guessing silently or stalling.

A single user can now run multiple conversations in parallel in Protégé by opening multiple tabs in the same web browser. Responses stream independently into the corresponding browser tab.
Patent analysis is rarely linear. Analysts often want to pursue a follow up question or adjacent topic while another answer is still being generated. Parallel conversations reduce waiting time and better match real exploratory workflows.
Submitting a prompt in one conversation no longer blocks work. Streaming responses are routed to their originating browser tab, and failures in one conversation do not interrupt others.
This release enables parallel work, but does not yet include parallel conversation in one browser tab, per conversation cancellation, live synchronisation across devices, or a broader redesign of conversation navigation.

Where to select charts and tables
Charts and table templates - \"Analysis Templates\"
At a high level, PatentSight+ offers a range of charts types for your analyses. These are Bar, Column, Waterfall, Line, Pie, Bubble, Matrix, Map, Sunburst and Radar.
Each chart type is suited to different analytical questions such as trends over time, benchmarking, portfolio structure, and geographic analysis amongst others, whereas tables are most suited when you need exact values and structured comparisons rather than visual trends.
In PatentSight+, you have the freedom to construct your own charts and tables, or choose from a selection of pre-configured 'Analysis Templates' as shown in the image below.

You can create visualizations in two ways:

If you add a template chart or table before running a search, it will initially display sample data. Once you build and execute a search query in the search panel, the template automatically updates with your actual search results. After that, you can modify the chart or table settings as needed.
Templates automatically populate once a search query is run and can be customized afterward.
In addition to individual charts, tables, and Analysis Templates, PatentSight+ also provides Playbooks.
Playbooks are pre-structured workbooks that combine multiple charts, tables, and predefined filters around a specific analytical topic such as Benchmarking, M&A, and Trends. In the PatentSight Business Intelligence, you can share your work (workbooks, tags, saved searches etc.) with your colleagues and with your PatentSight consultant directly in your account. Sharing contents is particularly useful if you are working in a team in an account with more than one user ID. You can benefit from each other’s analysis results, save time by sharing search queries and review each other’s work.
1. Click on Workbook → Share in the main tool bar.
2. To share your object with another user (e.g., Sample User) or group of users in your account, tick the box of the sharing right you want to give them whether that's Read, Modify/Write or Admin access.
Since workbooks, tags and saved searches all have the same saving place, their sharing settings can all be accessed and edited in the same way.
1. Click on Workbook → Organize in the main tool bar.
2. Access the folder where you have saved the content you want to share.
3. Select the content (e.g., a workbook) you want to share with another user and click on \"Edit\".

Once you have saved and shared a workbook with a colleague, or a member of the PatentSight team, you can now simply share the link with them. Meaning they can quickly access the workbook, without having to look for it in your shared folder.

In the first instance, PatentSight+ admins manage and share access to AI classifiers, and classifier taxonomies. If you're granted Admin access to the AI classifier or classifiers, you then have the ability to grant Read, Feedback or Admin access to others.
Only users explicitly granted access will see and use AI Classifiers in their PatentSight+ dashboards and analyses. This ensures compliance with licensing agreements and governance policies.
Note that if the 'share' icon is greyed out (see below), this means that you don't have admin permissions to manage access to that particular AI classifier or taxonomy. If you hover over the greyed out icon, a tool tip will explain why:
If you share an AI classifier with the group \"Enterprise at ...\" (or: \"Essentials at ...\", \"Reviewers at...\", \"Readers at ...\") displayed at the top of your list, your content will be shared with all Enterprise users (or: Essential users, Reviewers, Readers) within your account.
Note:
When a saved object is shared with another user or a PatentSight consultant, the recipient(s) will be informed by email. A sharing notification is sent when the following objects are shared:
After sharing the rights (Read, Write/Edit, Admin) to another user, two additional check boxes will be activated.
Notify Recipients: The check box “Notify Recipient” is selected by default. All users selected will receive a notification by email. Please deselect the check box if you don’t want to send the notification to a particular user.
Add Message for Recipients: You can add a message to the sharing notification. Please check “Add Message for Recipients” to insert a text message.
Click on “Save” to trigger the email notification. A sample email notification is shown in the following screenshot. It includes the name of the sharing user (here: “Sample User”), the name of the shared object (here: “Sample Sharing Workbook”), the access rights (here: modify/write) and the direct link to the shared object. The additional message will be included in the notification body:
When a workbook is shared which includes Tags, Custom Fields or Saved Searches only one notification for the workbook will be sent. No notification will be sent separately for the Tags, Custom Fields or Saved Searches used in the workbook. The same applies to when a folder was shared including multiple workbooks or tags.
Note:
Only individual users and group members who have notifications enabled at the time of sharing can receive sharing notifications by email. If the recipient unselects notifications preferences in their Account Settings, this user will not be informed.
Newly selected group members will be notified when granted access to the object. Existing members will not receive notifications, and notifications will not be sent when access is revoked.
To customize the notification preferences the recipient can set their settings under the Account Settings.
The default settings can be customized by selecting or unselecting the objects under Notification. Please click on “Apply” once you have selected the notifications you want to receive. In the example above only, notifications will be received when workbooks are shared. For all other objects (Tags, Custom Fields, Saved Searches, Folders) no email will be sent to the recipient.

After selecting or generating your search, this information is fed to the Large Language Model (LLM) which processes the contextual chart data, and search details, which the LLM then uses to generate the explanation.
The AI Assistant then quickly generates a 'Summary', setting the context and highlighting key chart statements.
The 'Key Insights' section presents the main insights and potential drivers of the output and sources, while the 'Next Steps' section offers further analysis suggestions or business action recommendations based on these insights. Here is a brief interpretation of the data:
From the home page, the Analysis Builder can be found at the top. There are two fields. The first allows for the input of a patent owner's portfolio. Simply input the name of any patent owner that you'd like to analyse. Input the name and select from the drop down list.
Next input your analysis goal to the next field. When you click into the field, the builder makes suggestions for instructions that can be input. See below:
These instructions are then matched to an analysis template, which is a selection of charts and tables that fit in with the analysis goal that has been input.
When generating a search from the analysis builder, the AI-Powered Insights feature automatically converts the chart data from your search into detailed descriptions, generated by AI, conveniently shown in the side panel. These insights are split into a Summary, Key Findings and Next Steps.
These Insights are not only linked to the Organisation that you've input to the Analysis builder, but also the analysis goal that you input too. The goal of these AI Powered Insights is to inspire you, to bring up information for consideration that you may not have originally considered, or to simply cross check your understanding. You will also find the option to create a more generic version of the AI Insights without the context of your analysis goal, which can be found at the bottom of the side panel:
AI Powered Insights can also be generated from within a Custom Analysis:
The only difference being that you are required to click the 'Generate Insights' button from within your desired chart. The summary, key insights and next steps will then be displayed on the right.
Handy Hint: When generating insights from a custom analysis, those insights will not be linked to the goal of the analysis as the AI powered insights does not know your intention. Instead, the key insights will be based on the search input and chart selection/data.

AI Classifiers allow you to zone in on the patents that are relevant to the technology areas you operate in by building a 'Classifier' that is defined to your technology area.
LexisNexis PatentSight+ uses AI Classification to read all the millions of patents globally and pull the relevant patents into your Classifier. The Classifier is defined by you and the machine does all the hard work of going and finding the right patents. The machine can read more than 60 million patents an hour and looks at 200,000 data points in the patent.
At its core, an AI Classifier is a supervised machine learning algorithm trained to recognize patent families relevant to a specific technology domain.
Each patent family receives a classifier score ranging from 0 to 1 — where 0 means no relevance, and 1 signals a strong match. Everything above a 0.5 score is deemed a positive match to the classifier technology domain. For example, a patent family scoring 0.72 against your classifier would be considered a strong, positive match, while a family scoring 0.2 would be treated as not relevant to that technology domain.
LexisNexis PatentSight+ uses AI Classifiers to read all patent families globally, to pull the relevant families into your Classifier.
This scoring system enables precise, focused analysis of patent portfolios, technology landscapes, and innovation trends. The PatentSight full-text search runs on the English-language versions of all documents in our database regardless of their original language. Where original English texts are not available, we use machine translated versions thereof. This allows the use of English keywords to search in patent documents from all over the world.
The PatentSight full-text search is designed for searching for English keywords only. Searching for keywords in other languages is currently not supported.
In the field search mode, you can add the full-text search field to the search panel by clicking on \"Full-Text\" displayed on top of the search panel.
You can select which segment(s) of the patent documents your keywords should be searched in by ticking one or a combination of the four options \"Title\", \"Abstract\", \"Claims\", and \"Description\".
In the → syntax search mode, instead of clicking on the available filter elements, you can type your entire search query directly into the search filter.

Established players often show consistently high portfolio strength, while emerging players may be identified by recent or sudden increases in Patent Asset Index. The chart above shows the value distribution of a selected portfolio compared to all patents worldwide.
Patents are ranked globally by Competitive Impact and divided into ten equal value classes (deciles). The 10th decile represents the top 10% of patents worldwide, while the 1st decile represents the bottom 10%. When filtering by Owner, the chart shows how that portfolio is distributed across these value classes.
A high concentration of patents in the upper deciles indicates a strong and valuable portfolio, while a large share in the lower deciles may highlight pruning potential. Portfolio Size and Patent Asset Index (PAI) are shown on the y-axis to reflect quantity and overall strength.

The Patent family list is shown alongside the Family Viewer, which presents information in structured cards. These cards include portfolio indicators, family members, legal status and legal events, prior and subsequent art, tags, and technology classification.
You can open documents in the integrated Document Viewer to access English titles, abstracts, claims, descriptions, and drawings. The Drawing Viewer allows zooming, rotating, and browsing through all figures of a document.

The chart above compares Technology Clusters based on both portfolio size and patent quality. Here the bubbles display technology clusters, but could also display IPC classes or owners or other sorting options of your choice.
Portfolio Size (x-axis) shows the number of patent families with at least one active family member, while Competitive Impact (y-axis) reflects PatentSight’s patent quality metric. The bubble size represents the Patent Asset Index (Portfolio Size × Competitive Impact), indicating the overall strength of each cluster. Clusters with a small portfolio size but high Competitive Impact, and a large portfolio size but low Competitive Impact, may have equal bubble sizes. This syntax uniquely identifies the classifier by its complete location in the taxonomy, preventing unintended inclusion of other nodes or child classifiers.
In Syntax Mode, selecting a taxonomy node automatically selects all underlying AI Classifiers associated with that node. This mirrors the hierarchy in the taxonomy: choosing a parent node expands to include all its child classifiers without requiring manual selection.
For example, if you select the taxonomy node “3D Printing”, the following AI Classifiers will automatically be included in your syntax-based search:
This ensures that your query fully reflects the structure and scope of the taxonomy, making it both comprehensive and consistent with the intended classification logic.
In PatentSight+ you can verify the export by checking the 'Last Exported' and the 'Last Built' (the Date the Classifier was last modified) under Option -> Manage Access for AI Classifiers.
This information is included in the respective columns shown below.
Additionally, by clicking the AI Classifier name (shown in blue below), a new window appears which also includes the last exported and last built date, in addition to the scope of the AI Classifier.
