What is Protégé in PatentSight+?
LexisNexis Protégé™ in LexisNexis® PatentSight+™ is a GenAI-powered assistant, allowing you to ask questions that are quickly turned into structured, visual, and contextualized answers.
It is an AI agent with the persona of an IP analyst using PatentSight+ on your behalf, that is trained to understand the kind of query you have. Instead of manually navigating charts, filters, and workflows, Protégé allows you to ask questions whilst still operating on top of the same trusted PatentSight+ data, metrics, and analytics.
How does Protégé work and what can it do?
You ask a question
Protégé determines which PatentSight+ analyses to run
Protégé retrieves and analyzes the relevant data
Protégé returns explanations, visualizations, and context
The data beneath Protégé is the same fully owned, curated LexisNexis® patent data trusted by global IP teams for over 25 years.
Built for intellectual property professionals and innovation-focused business leaders, Protégé enables users to ask questions in plain language and receive structured, contextualized visual answers drawn from the curated and enriched global PatentSight+ dataset and scientifically developed, industry-proven methodologies.
Protégé doesn’t just retrieve information; it interprets user intent, applies benchmarking logic, and returns structured, visual insights without requiring deep patent analytics or data expertise. Put simply, you ask a question and Protégé delivers highly differentiated insights. Protégé provides the ease of AI-driven interactions without compromising on data quality.
What sets Protégé apart from other AI tools?
Unlike general-purpose AI tools, Protégé is purpose-built for strategic IP decision-making in PatentSight+. It supports IP-specific questions such as portfolio strength, competitive benchmarking, and technology trends, grounded in LexisNexis® methodologies, including the Patent Asset Index, Technology Relevance, and Competitive Impact.
General-purpose AI tools can be useful, but they are not designed to run PatentSight+ analytics or apply its methodologies. Protégé operates on curated, traceable PatentSight+ data and is designed to support structured, decision-oriented patent analysis rather than open-ended exploration.
Protégé balances AI flexibility with analytical correctness. Responses may vary slightly when the same question is asked more than once, reflecting differences in how user intent is interpreted. However, each response is grounded in the perspective of a patent analyst and in the same underlying data and analytics.
To protect analytical integrity, Protégé does not generate or alter numeric values. AI is used to interpret questions and determine how to query the data, while charts and visualizations are produced through a deterministic process using PatentSight+ data and analytics. This approach ensures that visual outputs remain consistent with the underlying data.
By combining established IP methodologies with relevant business context and a controlled analytical framework, Protégé helps users reach reliable, actionable insights more efficiently.
Protégé supports structured patent analysis by:
Interpreting user questions using an analyst-style reasoning approach
Operating on curated, traceable PatentSight+ data
Supporting decision-oriented analysis beyond exploratory discovery
This approach combines established IP methodologies with relevant business context to support efficient, well-grounded analysis.
Who is it for?
Protégé in PatentSight+ is designed for users who need high-value answers to complex patent questions without the hassle of manually constructing queries, building filters or dashboards.
Protégé is built for IP analysts but accessible to a wide range of professionals including R&D, corporate strategy, M&A, and executive leadership. It is designed to remove technical barriers and can prove valuable to a wide range of professionals who don’t have extensive experience with patent tools.
