What is a Playbook?
A Playbook is a ready-made analysis example designed to help you answer common intellectual property and patent strategy questions more quickly and consistently.
Each Playbook is delivered as a workbook that already contains:
Preconfigured filters
Analysis templates
Charts and visualizations
Explanatory commentary to guide interpretation
Instead of starting from a blank workbook, you can begin with a proven analysis structure and adapt it to your own data and objectives.
Example scenario
Imagine you want to understand how your patent portfolio compares to competitors in a specific technology area. Rather than deciding which metrics to use and how to visualize them, you can open the Benchmarking Playbook, apply your company and competitor filters, and immediately see a structured comparison, with explanations that help you interpret the results.
Why use Playbooks?
Playbooks are designed to support day-to-day IP analytics work by reducing setup time and uncertainty.
Faster workflows
Playbooks already include predefined filters, charts, and layouts. This allows you to move directly to analysis and interpretation instead of building everything from scratch.
Built-in best practices
Each Playbook reflects a commonly used analytical approach. The structure, metrics, and visualizations are based on established ways of analyzing patent data.
Reduced guesswork
Every worksheet includes a comment field that explains why the chart or table is useful and how to interpret the results.
Many of the charts and tables also include our AI-Powered Insights feature, which goes a step further to analyze the underlying chart data to explain what you’re seeing. AI-Powered Insights are organised into a summary, key insights and next steps of follow up analyses you may wish to run.
This guidance helps users understand not just what they are seeing, but how to use it in practice.

AI-Powered Insights
Whether you’re working in a Playbook workbook or building a custom analysis, PatentSight+ includes AI-Powered Insights to help you quickly interpret what you’re seeing in charts and tables.
Explain chart and table results in plain language
In any chart or table, you can select 'Explain data' to open a side panel that turns the underlying results into an easy-to-read explanation. This helps you confirm your understanding and spot meaningful patterns faster.
What you’ll see
AI-Powered Insights are typically organised into:
Summary – a plain-language overview of what the data shows
Key Insights – notable patterns, comparisons, or drivers visible in the output
Next Steps – suggested follow-on analyses you may want to run
Works with Playbooks and your own analyses
In Playbooks: Use Explain data to understand the purpose and takeaway of a preconfigured chart or table, then adjust filters to match your scenario.
In custom analyses: You can still generate insights from a chart/table you created yourself—useful when you want a quick interpretation without writing your own narrative.
AI-Powered Insights are designed to support analysis and speed up interpretation. As with any AI-generated content, it’s best practice to validate insights especially for high-stakes decisions.

Accessing and customizing Playbooks
Playbooks are stored within the PatentSight+ workbook environment, and can be accessed from two areas.
From the PatentSight+ homepage:
Scroll down to the 'Playbooks' section, and click on any of the icons to open the selected Playbook in a new workbook. Note that you can use the left and right arrows to scroll through the various Playbooks available to you.
From within an existing Workbook:
Whether you've navigated to a new Workbook from the Custom Analysis tile, or are in an existing Workbook, you can open a Playbook like you would any saved or shared Workbook.
| From the top menu, select Workbook and then Open. |
| Select 'Enterprise Playbooks' from the side menu. | |
| Next, select the Playbook you'd like to open by clicking the selection box as shown here. Please note that you can only select one Playbook to open at a time. | |
| Click Confirm. |
You can then use the Playbook like any Workbook to:
Adjust search filters to match your objectives
Apply filters across all worksheets
Save the edited Playbook to your own folder with a custom name
This allows each Playbook to evolve into a reusable asset tailored to your organization’s needs.
