What this article covers
- Explains the two checkpoints available for validating a Protégé analysis: the Result Set Overview and direct access to the PatentSight+ Result List.
- Shows how to use the Result Set Overview to review the search syntax, total number of search results, filing time period and family status of included results.
- Shows how to open the underlying patent families directly in the PatentSight+ Result List for record-level review without rebuilding the search.
- Demonstrates how the two checkpoints work together to validate the dataset before analysis and during analysis to review the underlying patent records.
Providing Two Checkpoints for your Protégé analysis
Checkpoint One: Result Set Overview
Checkpoint Two: Direct access to PatentSight+ Result List
Providing Two Checkpoints for your Protégé analysis
- Before analysis begins, so you can confirm the dataset reflects your analytical intent.
- During analysis, so you can review the underlying patent families at record level.
Checkpoint One: Result Set Overview
How to use it
1. Ask your question:
What are the highest performing technologies in the BMW portfolio?
2. Review the query Protégé built
The complete search syntax is displayed for each chart, in addition to the total number of search results (Patent Families), filing time period (Filing Years) and family status of included results (by clicking the 'i' icon next to 'Patent Families'):
The Result Set Overview when exploring a portfolio, showing the underlying search syntax, patent family count, filing years, and family status of included results, before analysis begins.
3. Check the overview panel for three things
- Patent Families: Does the overall volume look plausible? An unexpectedly high count may indicate a broad search. An unexpectedly low count may indicate an overly restrictive search.
-
Filing Years: Does the range match your period of interest?
Unexpectedly old or recent filings may suggest the need for additional constraints. - Patent Families Included: What status of families are included in the results?
4. Confirm or refine
Protégé states these findings as scope review observations, and provides practical next steps:
Why it matters
Scope issues often become visible only after the analysis has been completed. By that point, you may already have spent time interpreting insights derived from an unsuitable dataset. Validating the dataset first allows potential issues to be identified and corrected early, reducing rework and improving confidence in the final analysis.
Who it's for
The Result Set Overview is particularly valuable for users conducting landscape, whitespace or competitive scans. In these workflows, an incorrectly defined patent set can undermine the conclusions drawn from the analysis.
Checkpoint Two: Direct access to PatentSight+ Result List
Once you have confirmed the scope is right, the next natural question is usually "let me actually read a few of these." Protégé allows you to open the corresponding PatentSight+ Result List while preserving the validated search context.
How to use it
From within a Protégé response, select 'Open Result List' to launch straight into the PatentSight+ Result List with your search already applied.

From there it is the full PatentSight+ experience you are already familiar with including: family details, claims, drawings, inventors, applicants and family members. This supports the detailed record level review that complements the conversational analysis:

Note: The PatentSight+ Result List now includes the 'Summarize with Protégé feature, where Protégé can summarize with a first overview of the patent family, including family snapshot, technical summary, plain-language summary, key claimed features, technology relevance, potential applications and suggested next steps. Follow-up questions can then be used for a more detailed review after this summary. Click here to learn more.
Why it matters
Protégé is the fastest way to ask questions and interpret results. The Result List is where you inspect individual families in detail. Previously, moving between the two meant selecting to open the analysis in PatentSight+ and running the query; a similarly small step but one that broke the flow between "this landscape looks interesting" and "let me check the underlying families myself." Removing it means the scope you confirmed at checkpoint one, is the scope you review at record level, with nothing lost in translation.
Who it's for
- Reading claims in detail
- Confirming ownership
- Reviewing technical disclosures
- Verifying specific examples cited by Protégé
- Investigating notable patent families identified during analysis
Together, the two checkpoints support a simple validation workflow:
Ask your question, validate the scope, run the analysis and then review the underlying records
FAQs
Do I have to respond to the Result Set Overview?
Why doesn't the overview tell me more about the results?
How do I change the search after seeing the overview?
Tell Protégé what to change, such as narrowing the time period, adding or removing a jurisdiction, excluding a technology concept. It rebuilds the query and generates a new Result Set Overview for review.
Can I reuse the search syntax somewhere else?
Yes. The exact search syntax is shown with the overview, and can be reused directly in Custom Analysis, so it can be copied and reused.
What carries over when I open Result List?
The search context carries over. Conversation history, generated summaries, comments and other conversational outputs do not transfer into PatentSight+ currently.
