Protégé Release (2nd October, 2026)

Overview of updates

• PatentSight+ Tags Available in Protégé
• Move Between Protégé and PatentSight+ Result Lists
• Richer Ways to Explore Patent Results

Period covered: Improvements delivered over the last four weeks.

This release focuses on three practical improvements: enabling analysis using curated patent sets, strengthening workflows between Protégé and PatentSight+, and expanding the ways patent results can be explored and interpreted.

The update makes it easier to move between conversational analysis in Protégé and detailed patent review in PatentSight+. Users can now apply their PatentSight+ Tags in Protégé, allowing analyses to be scoped to existing portfolio definitions, strategic technology areas, competitor watchlists, and other curated patent sets. Users can also open matching patent families directly in the PatentSight+ Result List or generate a Protégé summary from an existing Result List.

The release further expands patent result set exploration capabilities. Patent family information can now be reviewed and compared in structured tables, while correlation matrices help analysts investigate relationships between patent variables and identify potential patterns within a patent set.

Most impactful for:

1. Analysis using curated patent sets: use PatentSight+ Tags to analyse existing portfolio definitions, technology areas, competitor watchlists, and other curated patent sets

2. Connected workflows: move seamlessly between Protégé and PatentSight+ Result Lists for conversational analysis, summarisation, and detailed patent review

3. Enhanced result exploration: compare patent families in structured tables and investigate relationships between patent variables using correlation matrices

What has changed?

Protégé now supports PatentSight+ Tags as a filtering dimension for search and analysis. Users can add one or more existing PatentSight+ Tags to a conversation and use them to scope their analysis.

Why it matters

Many organisations use tags to define strategic technology areas, competitor watchlists, licensing opportunities, and other curated patent sets. Bringing PatentSight+ Tags into Protégé allows users to analyse these curated patent sets directly, without having to recreate complex portfolio definitions in each prompt.

Analytical behaviour

Users can:

1. select one or more PatentSight+ Tags as filters for search and analysis

2. combine tags with existing filters such as owners, filing dates, jurisdictions, and technology classifications

3. use tag filtered patent sets across counts, rankings, KPI summaries, trend analyses, portfolio comparisons, and portfolio metrics

4. compare tagged portfolios against competitors, technologies, or other tagged portfolios

Constraints and implications

Protégé can use existing PatentSight+ Tags to scope analysis but cannot create, edit, apply, or delete them. Tags must be added to the conversation using the + menu or / command before they can be referenced in a prompt.

To maintain performance and stability, Protégé may limit document level analysis for exceptionally large tagged datasets and prompt users to refine their scope.

Example

An analyst can compare filing trends, portfolio strength, or technology coverage for a tagged portfolio without manually recreating that portfolio definition in the conversation.

What has changed?

Protégé and the PatentSight+ Result List are now more closely connected. Users can open search results from Protégé directly in the PatentSight+ Result List, while analysts working in a Result List can use Summarize with Protégé to get an understanding of the invention.

Why it matters

Conversational analysis and detailed patent review serve different purposes. Analysts can use Protégé to explore and interpret a question, move into PatentSight+ to inspect the underlying patent families, or start from a Result List and use Protégé to quickly understand what a patent family protects - before deciding whether to refine the query or continue their analysis.

Analytical behaviour

1. Search results generated in Protégé can be opened directly in a PatentSight+ Result List.

2. The underlying search query and relevant search context are carried into the Result List.

3. From a PatentSight+ Result List, users can select Summarize with Protégé to open Protégé with the selected patent family and understand the claimed invention and its technical focus.

Constraints and implications

Moving from Protégé into the Result List preserves the search context, but not the complete Protégé conversation, generated summaries, or comments.

Summaries provide an initial overview of the patent family. Analysts can ask follow-up questions for a detailed review.

Example

An analyst exploring rodent trap technologies in Protégé can open the matching patent families directly in the PatentSight+ Result List for detailed review

Alternatively, an analyst starting with an existing PatentSight+ search can select "Summarize with Protégé" to investigate an individual family.

What has changed?

Protégé now provides additional ways to explore patent results, including structured tables for comparing patent families and correlation matrices for examining relationships between patent variables.

Why it matters

Different analytical questions require different ways of looking at the data. Tables support detailed side by side review of individual patent families, while correlation matrices help analysts investigate relationships and patterns across larger datasets.

Analytical behaviour

1. Information about multiple patent families can be presented in a structured table for easier comparison, sorting, and download.

2. Tables can include title, description, claims, abstract, legal status, and PatentSight quality metrics such as Market Coverage, Competitive Impact, and Technology Relevance.

3. Correlation matrices can visualise relationships between patent metrics and analytical variables, helping analysts identify patterns and potential areas for further investigation.

Constraints and implications

Patent family tables currently support a defined set of fields, including representative member, title, description, claims, abstract, first priority date, owners, Market Coverage, Competitive Impact, technology cluster, Technology Relevance, legal status, CPC, and IPC classifications. Other fields, such as inventor and applicant information, are not included in this release.

Example

An analyst comparing several patent families can review their technical content, legal status, classifications, and PatentSight quality metrics side by side in a table.
