What this article covers
- It explains that tables in PatentSight+ are dynamic analytical tools designed for structured comparison, ranking, and benchmarking across portfolios and technologies.
- Describes how to add tables using templates or blank inserts, and how different table structures support benchmarking, technology breakdown, and co-ownership analysis.
- Shows how to configure and interact with tables, including editing groupings and measures, sorting and ranking KPIs, calculating shares, using drag-and-drop, and refining searches directly from table rows.

What Tables Are and What They Allow You To Do
Tables in LexisNexis PatentSight+ are dynamic analytical tools designed for structured comparison and ranking. They allow you to:
Combine multiple groupings and KPIs
Rank portfolios by any measure
Calculate shares
Display visual data bars
Rearrange analytical structure
Refine your search directly from table rows
Unlike static exports, tables remain interactive and fully configurable throughout your analysis. We touch on this later on in this article.
How to Add a Table to your Workbook
Selecting a Table from Templates
You can select a table from the template area to make an analysis. Templates provide ready-made combinations of vertical groupings and measures.
Expand "Analysis Templates" |
|
| Access the section "Tables." | |
Select a suitable template, e.g., "Technology Cluster: Main Indicators." |
Inserting a Blank Table
You can also insert a blank table via "Insert" > "Table". You can then define groupings and KPIs according to your analytical objective.
Access "Insert" in the main tool bar |
|
| Select "Table" to insert a blank table |
Table Types
PatentSight provides a variety of table structures to support different analytical questions. While charts vary by visual format, tables vary by the combination of vertical groupings and measures used.
You can modify any table at any time via the Edit Table settings (gear wheel icon). Groupings and measures can be added, removed, reordered, or exchanged to adapt the table to your analytical objective.
Benchmark Table – Otherwise known as the 'Owner:Main Indicators' table showing Owners with key KPIs such as Patent Asset Index, Portfolio Size, and Competitive Impact.
Technology Breakdown Table – e.g., Otherwise known as the 'IPC: Main Indicators' table sorted by IPC or CPC classes, with key KPI measures such as Patent Asset Index, Portfolio Size, and Competitive Impact.
Co-Ownership Table – e.g., Owners and Co-Owners of patent families. For each it shows the number of co-owned patents (measured in Portfolio Size) as well as the combined strength (measured in Patent Asset Index) of these patents. This table shows joint R&D activities between companies. This chart can be found in the M&A Playbook.
Unlike charts, tables allow you to display multiple measures simultaneously and rank them directly within the same view.
Changing groupings or measures does not alter the underlying dataset. It restructures how the data is organized and compared.
Here you can see how the “Co-Ownership” table is configured within the platform, and how vertical groupings and measures can be edited via the gear wheel icon in the blue banner:
What Makes Up a Table (Structure and Key Elements)
A PatentSight table consists of:
Vertical Groupings - Define how rows are structured (e.g., Owners, IPC Classes, Regions). |
|
| Measures - Define the KPIs displayed (e.g., Patent Asset Index, Portfolio Size). | |
| "Edit Table" dialog - 'gear wheel' icon, allows full configuration access and 'X' button removes the table from the sheet entirely. |
The separation between vertical groupings/sorting, and measures, enables flexible benchmarking setups.
What You Can Configure in a Table
Edit rows and columns (known as vertical groupings and measures)
Access the configuration via the gearwheel icon, and you can: |
|
| Add a vertical grouping or measure. | |
| Remove a vertical grouping or measure via the bin icon next to it. | |
| Browse for a suitable vertical grouping or measure (after selecting the plus icon) | |
| Select a suitable vertical grouping or measure from categorized options. |
Drag and Drop
In this same view, drag and drop allows you to reorder:
Groupings within the “Vertical Groupings” section
Measures within the “Measures” section
You can also adjust the order of the vertical groupings and measures by dragging and dropping them directly in the table.
Drag and drop a measure in the "Edit Table" dialog to place it between two other measures |
|
| Drag and drop a column directly in the table, to place it between two other columns. |
Note: Vertical groupings can only be arranged within the "Vertical Groupings" section. Measures can only be arranged within the "Measures" section. It is not possible to drag a measure into the "Vertical Groupings" section or a vertical grouping into the "Measures" section.
Sorting and Ranking Capabilities
Tables provide powerful ranking functionality. You can:
Click on a column title to open this view. |
|
| Sort any column ascending or descending. Sorting transforms the table into a benchmarking and prioritization tool. | |
| Rank Portfiolio by any KPI via the drop down icon next to the current measure. |
Additional ranking features include:
Data Bars - visual performance comparison |
|
| Share Calculations - relative KPI contribution | |
| Column Deletion directly from the table |
Share Calculations
For numeric measures, you can calculate shares to analyze relative contribution.
This enables:
Portfolio share analysis
Competitive positioning
Segment dominance evaluation
How to Customize and Interact with a Table
In this article, we've covered how you can:
Modify the analytical structure without rebuilding the table.
Hide Items
If you do not want to display a certain item (e.g. an unwanted owner, tag, or IPC), you can hide it. Such a setting can be helpful for example if you want to hide an IPC Group which is not relevant for your analyses.
Note: Hidden items are still part of the analysis. The only difference is that they are not displayed anymore. You can also choose to hide items in the entire workbook, and even for all future workbooks. Click here to learn more.
Adjust Data Bar Colors
In the table, click the header for the column you wish to adjust e.g. Competitive Impact column. |
|
In the drop-down menu, click 'Change Color' to amend the data bar color for this column. |
Add Data from the table to your search
You can also drag and drop items from any chart or table into the search panel, thereby adding them to your search query.
Click on the checkmark icon to expand the checkbox column. |
|
| Select rows of interest by ticking the corresponding checkboxes. | |
| Drag and drop selected rows into the search panel. These vertical groupings, with the items from the respective rows will be added to the search query. |
